The Travel Industry Charity Events (TICE) initiative was founded in January 2005, when two prominent Western Cape leaders in travel Mildred Phillips & Carol Bayne debated how they could respond as they watched the true scale of the terrible Boxing Day Tsunami unfold. It was decided that something had to be done that would mobilize the tourism industry to help raise funds towards the disaster relief efforts in North Africa. As a result the very first TICE event was held, appealing to all sectors of the Western Cape travel industry to come together for a common goal. In its short history, what started as a once off call to action, has become an annual campaign that has supported a number of worthy causes. TICE has donated just over R1m to a variety of beneficiaries over the last few years!
The Western Cape is the only province in the country to have established an industry wide annual fund raising campaign that makes such a valuable difference. The beneficiaries are selected carefully with a focus on supporting the principles of responsible tourism, with an awareness of the 2002 Cape Town Declaration and its mandate.
Globally the tourism industry contributes a considerable amount to the worlds GDP, and with that power comes a responsibility to understand the impact of operating a tourism business. Each person has the potential to do something that will help to build a better future for the country by joining together for the greater good.
Traditionally TICE host a black tie dinner annually which is the highlight of the year’s fundraising. Smaller events are also hosted during the year. TICE events are always a fantastic night out and an opportunity to have fun with friends.
A large part of the fund raising on the black tie dinner night can be attributed to a vibrant auction hosted by Auction Alliance and one of their best auctioneers, Ish Hendricks, well known for his appearance on the reality television show, 'The Apprentice'. As with most charities, the success of the evening depends on the generosity of friends and colleagues who donate not only to the auction but to the list of auction items.
